What follows is an in-class assignment to write a prayer on the mundane activities of my day as opportunities to recognize God. It’s by no means complete. But I wrote as long as time allowed.
Lord, may I fall asleep in your presence and awake with an awareness.
May the sound of my alarm ring in the same manner as nine, noon, and three
That my first thoughts would be thoughts of you.
Heighten my awareness of your presence in the mundane,
even in the activities that begin my day.
Steady me.
Settle me.
In my pour and in my press,
remind me to slow down.
Boiling water and a four minute brew is not always convenient.
But in it, you call me to slowness.
You call me to attentiveness.
